The origin of mangosteen
Mangosteen is a fruit originated from Thailand, where they belive it to have healing power. According to an old legend, Buddha found and tasted the fruit when he was riding on a white elephant in the forest. ?Feeling its beneficial effect, he blessed the mangosteen and gave it to the people as heaven?s gift.? Because of this, Asian people consider it one of the holiest and most precious fruits and they call it the gods? fruit.
About the fruit
Mangosteen is a tropical evergreen tree, which reaches fruit-bearing in 10-15 years. Between May and September it produces thousands of deep purple fruits. During the harvest they pick the mature fruits by hand.
It?s a mandarin sized fruit with maroon, leathery peel. Inside of the fruit, we can find 5-6 white, gelatinous cloves with one seed per clove. Mangosteen?s flesh is juicy with a sweetish soury flavour. The fruit is widely usable. They even use the unworthy looking, thick fruit peel for leather tanning and for medical use as well.
