|REG Program - L-Citrulline powder, 80 g (en)|
Pure amino acid powder - food supplement.
The name of the amino acid L-citrulline originates from the latin name of watermelon (Citrullus vulgarius). It is not surprising that it was first isolated from watermelon during the experiments of Koga and Odake.
It is known, that proteins are macromolecules, and they consist quite long chains of amino acids. The chemical linking between these is called polypeptide bonding.
L-citrulline is not an essential amino acid nor a common dietary amino acid (due that the only good natural source of it is watermelon), but in the body it can be converted into and serves roles similar to L-arginine and L-ornithine supplementation. Many peptides contain citrulline and it is a key intermediate in the urea cycle. Also according to researches it is absorbed much better in the gut than L-arginine.
Its main biological effect in our body is the following*:
From L-citrulline L-arginine is formed in the urea cycle, then by using nitric oxide synthase, again L-citrulline is formed. After further chemical transformations, nitrogen monoxide is formed. This compound has a vasodilating effect in the body.
